Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said Thursday that President Biden has a burgeoning homelessness crisis in U.S. cities.
Carson, who leads the Trump administration’s housing and poverty initiative, told Fox News Numbers that the White House’s spending and regulatory policies have exacerbated the problem.

“These things are caused by over-regulation,” Carson said in an interview at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas. “This administration has so much regulation of the system and no one is really talking about it and doing anything about it.

The Biden administration’s regulatory regime, coupled with the coronavirus stimulus bill, has pushed up the cost of living, Carson said. Meanwhile, inflation is at its highest level in 40 years, making housing unaffordable for low-income Americans.

The former housing secretary said the Biden administration should learn from the Trump White House when it comes to the topic.
“In the last administration, at HUD alone, we reduced the number of regulatory barriers by more than 2,000,” Carson said. “You multiply that number in a lot of institutions and that’s the real reason the economy is recovering and doing well.”

Carson said that even if Biden chooses not to cut red tape, his administration could still empower faith-based groups and charities to step in and enhance services for the homeless.
“The difference is that people have a relationship with the church [and other organizations]. They don’t have a relationship with the government,” Carson said.

The homelessness crisis is becoming more prevalent in America’s urban centers, with tent camps popping up in once-vibrant communities. Local councils have mixed responses to the issue.

Some cities, like Los Angeles, have begun banning homeless camps near schools. Other cities, like New York City, have already begun clearing tent cities.
Meanwhile, the White House has appointed a homeless czar to help mobilize federal agencies to respond to the crisis.
