Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Sunday forced Senate Democrats to make changes to the Reducing Inflation Act that would add elements to the Build Back Better Act.
Sanders suggested An amendment that would raise the corporate tax rate to pay for the expanded child tax credit. The amendment lost 97 to 1, with Sanders the only voter who supported the amendment.
Sanders has pushed for more leftist policies in the Reducing Inflation Act, which doesn’t include more benefits like increasing the child tax credit. Sanders proposed amendments during the “vote” portion of the settlement process, and senators could offer an almost unlimited number of amendments.
Some senators were unhappy that Sanders had proposed amendments to the bill before a final vote in the Senate.
“I don’t think it helps. I don’t think it helps the child tax credit,” Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO).

“I don’t want to embarrass anyone,” Sanders said, defending his strategy. He said his proposal had strong support in the Senate Democratic conference.
“Are they frustrated that we need to expand and extend child credit? … Every amendment I propose today has broad support,” the Vermont Democratic socialist said.
Despite internal debate over the changes, Sanders said he would vote for it to pass even without his proposed changes.
Sanders isn’t the only Democrat to propose an amendment; Sen. Rafael Warnock (D-GA) has proposed a health care amendment that Democrats also vetoed.
