The Kansas City Chiefs are severing ties with some deep secondary because cornerback Deandre Baker has been released, per ESPNBaker has been with the Chiefs the past two seasons, playing 10 games in the regular season, including two starts, and recording 21 steals, 1 sack and 2 defensive passes.
Baker was originally selected by the New York Giants with the 30th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft in Georgia. The Jim Thorpe Award winner recorded 61 steals and eight defensive passes in his rookie season, but ran into trouble off the court that quickly changed his career.
Baker was charged with armed robbery in May 2020. While the charges were eventually dropped after his alleged victim’s attorney was arrested on racketeering charges, Baker was released by the Giants and found himself on the commissioner’s immunity list. The Chiefs then decided to test him in November 2020. At just 24 years old, it’s likely that another NFL team will take a chance on Baker.

The Chiefs can afford to cut back in the middle because they’ve added something this offseason. Kansas City drafted Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson, and they also traded the Houston Texans for the versatile Lonnie Johnson.
Statistically, the Chiefs ranked sixth in yards conceded last season, but they allowed only 21.4 points per game — eighth in the league. This unit is expected to be improved in 2022, something the Chiefs will definitely need to do if they want to retain the division title.
