EarFun’s Superb New Bluetooth Speaker Is A Perfect Party Partner

Henry Ford said: “You can have any color as long as it’s black”. Sure, he’s talking about the Ford Model T, but the same could be said for the EarFun UBoom L Bluetooth speaker. Unfortunately, this cute little speaker is only available in black, but don’t let that put you off. What the UBoom L lacks in color, it makes up for in sound quality and even makes the likes of JBL’s Flip 6 worth the money.

The EarFun UBoom L looks like most other waterproof-rated Bluetooth speakers designed for party use. It fits comfortably in one hand and feels relatively light, but don’t let that fool you. This speaker cranks up the volume and has an endurance battery. The UBoom L features two lithium-ion batteries that provide up to 16 hours of playback on a single charge of 5,200mAh.

An impressive 14W per channel powers the speaker’s two 55mm dynamic drivers, while two passive radiators boost bass. At this point, I should say that while the bass isn’t seismic, it’s loud enough to be heard without drowning out the mids and highs. There’s also an outdoor mode that boosts the bass and cranks up the volume when noise levels rise and the party gets loud.

UBoom L is composed and tuned by Oluv (Olaf Lunbanski), a talented Austrian music producer who knows how to get a great sound. The EarFun UBoom L may look a little gloomy, but under the speaker grille, there’s a little sonic animal. Even better, you can pair the UBoom L with a second speaker to create a wider stereo soundstage and louder volume. It’s the perfect pool party companion.

On top of the speaker are waterproof buttons for pausing music, adjusting volume, pairing with a Bluetooth source, powering the speaker and switching to outdoor mode. The UBoom L plays well when laid flat on a table, or it can be turned upside down when space is tight and you need to make more room for some extra drinks.

Like most Bluetooth speakers, the EarFun UBoom L is easy to set up and only needs to be paired once with your smartphone or laptop. After initial pairing, whenever you turn on the speaker, it connects and is ready to play in about a second. The battery takes about four hours to fully charge, and EarFun includes a USB-C cable for charging in the box.

In addition to connecting via Bluetooth, the EarFun also adds a 3.5mm stereo jack input for connecting a Walkman or any other analog source, such as a device without Bluetooth. There is also an onboard Bluetooth profile next to the microphone, so the UBoom L can be used as a speakerphone. Great for group calls or video chats.

The sound from this seemingly ordinary speaker is spot on. Considering its size, there’s plenty of bass, mids, and highs that are surprisingly clear and neutral. When the party gets loud, the outdoor mode cancels the noise. The 28W power rating is impressive for a speaker of this size, and it produces excellent volume with little noticeable distortion or rattling at higher volumes.

judgment: The EarFun UBoom L is an excellent small speaker fine-tuned by Oluv. Some speakers have more bass, but you won’t find them at this price. If you want a waterproof speaker with great sound and long battery life, the UBoom L is a great value. I like that you can pair two speakers together. I also like that it can be used as a speakerphone. Many bluetooth speakers don’t come with hands-free functionality, which is a shame because it’s a great feature, especially when you’re on vacation and want to call home. highly recommended.
