Show of force near Taiwan and Japanese islands
For the past five days, China has been sending military aircraft and drones to areas near Taiwan and Japan’s westernmost islands as part of its efforts to intimidate Taiwan and the United States.
Taiwan’s military reported that Chinese military planes entered its so-called “air defense identification zone” or crossed the centerline of the Taiwan Strait at least 131 times during this period.

These aircraft include at least 105 fighter jets and other types of aircraft. While Taiwan has reported similar incursions into the airspace since at least 2019, the number of sorties detected in recent days is unprecedented.

Japan’s Defense Ministry reported that on Aug. 4, Chinese military drones conducted multiple flights near Miyakojima, one of Japan’s westernmost islands. Just two days ago, Japan reported that at least five Chinese missiles had landed in its exclusive economic zone.

Chinese missiles land near Taiwan and Japan’s economic zone
At least 11 Chinese missiles landed in waters north, south and east of Taiwan on Thursday. The People’s Liberation Army claimed that its missiles “all hit their targets accurately,” while Japan said five missiles landed in its exclusive economic zone.
Japan’s Defense Ministry described the paths of nine of the missiles, including five that Japan said had landed in its exclusive economic zone — the first time a missile has landed in these waters.

where China plans to conduct military exercises
Shortly after Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plane landed in Taiwan late Tuesday, China announced it would hold military exercises in an area that appears to have violated Taiwan’s territorial waters and is closer to Taiwan than similar areas announced during the Taiwan Strait crisis. 1990s.

In a statement carried by state news agency Xinhua, China warned ships and aircraft not to enter the areas for “security reasons”. One of the planned drilling areas appears to be less than 12 miles from the southern port city of Kaohsiung, according to a map released by Xinhua.
