EVGA just dropped the price of its base RTX 3090 Ti graphics card to $1,000 below the US MSRP, a clear sign that high-end GPU prices are still dropping rapidly.
Yes, an eagle-eyed Twitter user found a clear FTW3 game model for $1000 (opens in new tab)which had a recommended price of $2,150, is now $1,150 on the card maker’s online store, so it’s pretty close to half price right now.
Bullshit, but Jay said buy it now? pic.twitter.com/G96qqouSqHAugust 6, 2022
The FTW3 Ultra Gaming model isn’t too expensive at $1,200, with slightly higher boost speeds (so it’s definitely another option if the base FTW3 graphics card is out of stock).
Note that the RTX 3090 Ti has an official MSRP of $2,000 (£1,879, AU$2,499), but EVGA is giving a slight premium to its FTW3 version, as the enhanced cooling system allows the GPU to run a little faster.
Analysis: Buy, or wait?
Comparing that price to the rest of the line, EVGA’s RTX 3080 Ti currently sells for $1,100, so you can get a 3090 Ti for $50 more, for those who want top-of-the-line , which is totally a no-brainer – Ampere graphics cards from EVGA currently (assuming, of course, their PC case, cooling and PSU can handle the 3090 Ti).
You may recall that recently Nvidia officially dropped the RTX 3090 Ti to $1,500 (along with other top-tier Ampere graphics cards), but flagship GPUs seem to be rapidly dropping from this reduced level. At Newegg, for example, you can now buy a Zotac 3090 Ti for $1,240, but EVGA is nearly $100 less.
The grapevine we’ve been hearing lately is that Nvidia’s partners have excess RTX 3000 card inventory to clear out, which seems like a pretty clear sign that this may indeed be the case.
This is certainly a massive price cut for EVGA, and if the next-gen Lovelace GPUs are coming now, it’s said that the first to launch will be the RTX 4090 – so it makes sense that the biggest discount should be applied to the top end of the RTX 3090 and 3090 Ti first, because These proposals will quickly become less enticing as Lovelace’s release time approaches.
What might happen now is that more graphics card makers drop prices on the 3090 Ti (and possibly other high-end Nvidia models) and we might see a race to sell them – possibly. That said, there’s a limit to the price if we’ve seen almost half price, and at its current price, the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti doesn’t look too shabby to say the least.
On the other hand, when Lovelace arrived, there were rumors that the RTX 4070 might be on par with the 3090 Ti (maybe even a little faster) – but it promises to be the most popular model of the high-end Lovelace lineup, so buy it at the MSRP Might prove challenging (or might even buy it in the first place). Especially if the 4070 offers as much a performance value proposition as speculation seems to suggest at an eye-popping price.
Since the RTX 4070 probably won’t be available this year, as another rumor suggests, buying the RTX 3090 Ti when it’s getting cheaper might not be a bad move — at least for those impatient to see how Lovelace rolls out and inventory situation was resolved. We still advise ourselves to wait, but then again, we understand those who want to make the leap now…
