Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green blamed Antifa and said “no one could convince” her that the violent protesters involved in the Jan. 6 unrest were supporters of Donald Trump.
“I was very upset at the time. I never thought something like this would happen. When that happened, I thought, this is Antifa, no one can convince me that this is a so-called Trump supporter, we know there There are a lot of mistakes and I can’t wait for an investigation, a real investigation,” Ms Green said.
The far-right Republican leader is talking to 2020 election conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell about his show.
She said the Biden administration’s response to the unrest was a “witch hunt” with more than 800 arrests and more than 200 sentences.
The congresswoman added that those who did “something they shouldn’t” deserve better while incarcerated, citing her visit to the prison.
“Well, they were charged for something they shouldn’t have done, well, that happened, they deserved a day in court, they deserved due process rights, but honestly, oh my gosh, it happened in It’s heartbreaking what happened to these people,” she said in a Lindell TV interview.
She added: “I was in that prison and I saw them and it was so sad. They didn’t bathe, they didn’t get a haircut, they didn’t shave because they weren’t vaccinated. If they weren’t vaccinated, their treatment would be Worse, but what kind of country are we?”
The Georgia representative has yet to take a firm position on whether she believes supporters of Mr. Trump were involved in the U.S. Capitol riot.
One of Trump’s biggest supporters of the election theft claimed to declare Joe Biden’s victory, Ms Green sent a text message to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on the day of the violence and said she feared there would be Active shooter in the field.
“Please tell the president to calm people down. This is not the solution to any problem,” said Ms Green, who frequently spreads conspiracy theories.
But the next day, she tried to overturn her charges against Mr. Trump, saying: “I don’t think President Trump caused the attack on the Capitol.”
“It’s not his fault. Antifa in the crowd [sic] and incite it, sadly people follow. But when people try everything and no one listens and nothing works, I guess they think they have no choice,” she said in the text.
On January 17, with days left in Trump’s presidency, Ms Green said he should call for martial law, which she misspelled as “marshall.”
“In our private chats with members, several said the only way to save our republic is Trump’s call for the Marshall Act [sic],” she said. “I don’t know those things. I just want you to tell him. They stole this election. we all know. They will destroy our country next.please call [sic] He decrypts as much as he can so we can hunt down Biden and anyone else! “
